Storms Disrupt Travel Plans Across Spain

Spain battles ongoing storms as torrential rains continue to lash the country, wreaking havoc on travel and daily life. From flooded runways at Palma Airport in Mallorca to waterlogged streets in various regions of Spain, the relentless downpour shows no signs of letting up.

Videos circulating on social media capture the chaos unfolding across Spain, with airport workers braving flooded tarmacs and travelers scrambling for cover from the heavy rain.

Despite efforts to resume normal operations, flights at Palma Airport remain delayed, with at least 21 departures feeling the ripple effects of the storm. With a whopping 9cm of rainfall recorded in under an hour, the severity of the situation is undeniable.

Regions on High Alert as Rain Continues to Pour

Meanwhile, communities across Andalucía, Aragón, Baleares, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Región de Murcia, and Comunidad Valenciana remain on high alert as the downpour persists. Localized flooding and emergency responses paint a picture of the challenges faced by residents in affected areas.

In the Region of Murcia, the battle against the elements continues, with nearly 100 incidents reported and flood prevention measures activated. Towns and cities like Las Torres de Cotillas, Calasparra,Yecla and Murcia City have borne the brunt of the rain.

Heightened Alert Levels

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has heightened its alert levels for the coming hours (June 12), particularly in regions like the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón. AEMET has raised the rainfall warning to orange, with up to 30 liters per square meter expected within an hour, accompanied by potentially severe thunderstorms and hail. This heightened alert underscores the continued threat posed by the relentless weather conditions.

As the orange alert remains in effect until midnight, residents and authorities in the affected areas are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Additionally, regions across the Región de Murcia continue to be under yellow alert for rainfall and storms, with precipitation forecasts indicating potential challenges for the Valle del Guadalentín, Lorca, Águilas, the Altiplano, the Vega del Segura, and the North east.
