Weather Update: Another Heatwave on the Horizon

Over the weekend, Spain saw unusually high temperatures affecting nearly 5,000 towns across the country. In more than half of these locations, the heat was notably above average.

Valencia experienced some of the highest temperatures in Spain. The Comunitat Valenciana was under extreme heat warnings as temperatures rose to 44°C on Saturday afternoon, July 20 and reached 37°C on Sunday July 21.

The highest temperature recorded was an intense 44.5 °C in Atzeneta d’Albaida, Valencia. Alcoy/Alcoi in Alicante also experienced one of its warmest nights, with temperatures staying at 26.3 °C, making it a tropical night. In total, 1,952 towns have recently had tropical nights.

First Heatwave of the Summer Comes to an End

The first heatwave of the summer has now passed. Many areas across Spain wake up to cooler temperatures and cloudy skies. In regions like Cataluña, the first summer rains have arrived. On Saturday, up to 13 regions were under orange or yellow alerts for high temperatures, as reported by Aemet (the State Meteorological Agency).

Climate Trends and Insights

Spain’s average temperature is currently 2.9 °C above normal, hovering around 27.1 °C. Maximum temperatures have reached 34.4 °C, which is 3.6 °C above the usual average, and minimum temperatures are around 19.6 °C.

Looking Ahead: More Heat Expected Soon

Despite a temporary break from the heat across most of Spain, it won’t last long. Weather expert Roberto Brasero indicated that while temperatures will decrease for now, they are expected to rise again starting Tuesday July 23. This may signal the arrival of another heatwave next week.

Daily Weather Highlights from AEMET

July 22, 2024: Expect notable increases in maximum temperatures in northern Spain, with high values in the center, southwest, and around the Miño River. Strong winds are anticipated in Ampurdán, northern Balearic Islands, and between the Canary Islands.

July 23, 2024: Temperatures will stay high in most inland areas of the Peninsula and in southern parts of the Canary Islands. There will be strong easterly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar and trade winds in exposed areas of the Canary Islands.

July 24, 2024: The high temperatures and mostly clear skies will persist throughout much of Spain. More cloud cover and the possibility of light, scattered rain are expected in northern Galicia and the Cantabrian region. Dust might be present in the air in the Canary Islands and potentially in Ceuta and Melilla.

Overall, temperatures are likely to remain high across most of Spain, surpassing 36 °C in many inland areas. In some places, temperatures could even reach up to 42 °C.
