Summer Road Trips: What to Expect and How to Stay Safe
Summer is in full swing, and millions of people across Spain are gearing up for their holidays. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has forecasted a whopping 3.1 million road trips over the next two days alone. And hold on to your sun hats—August is expected to be the busiest month yet, with an incredible 48.3 million trips!
Traffic Tips: When and Where to Expect Delays
So, when should you brace for the most traffic? According to the DGT, the roads will be busiest between 4 PM and 11 PM on Wednesday, July 31, and from 9 AM to 2 PM on Thursday, August 1. The roads leading to beaches and popular holiday spots are likely to be packed, so plan accordingly.
DGT’s Game Plan for Smooth Travel
To keep things running smoothly, the DGT has pulled out all the stops:
- People Power: Extra officers from the Guardia Civil Traffic Division, Traffic Management Center staff, helicopter patrols, and maintenance crews are all on duty.
- Tech Support: Speed cameras, drones, surveillance cameras, and undercover vehicles will be in action to monitor the roads.
Expect reversible lanes and alternate routes in high-traffic areas, and don’t be surprised if you see fewer construction crews—roadworks are paused to ease congestion. Plus, restrictions are in place for trucks carrying hazardous materials during peak times.
Handy Tips for a Safe Journey
Night Owl Travelers
Thinking of hitting the road at night to dodge the crowds? Smart move! Just keep these tips in mind:
- Plan Your Route: Know where you’re going before you set off.
- Check Your Car: Make sure all your lights and indicators are working, and give your windows a good clean.
- Rest Up: Get a good night’s sleep before your trip.
- Light Meals Only: Skip the heavy dinner and avoid alcohol.
- Slow Down: Drive a bit slower than usual since visibility is reduced at night.
- Use Low Beams: Avoid dazzling other drivers by switching to low beams when passing.
- Safe Stops: If you need to pull over, find a well-lit, straight section of the road and use your emergency signals.
Beat the Fatigue
Driving tired is no fun and can be dangerous. Watch out for these signs of fatigue:
- Feeling sleepy
- Headaches or sore muscles
- Irritated eyes or frequent blinking
- Restlessness
- Overheating or sweating
- Craving cigarettes or sweets more than usual
Take regular breaks every couple of hours, stay hydrated, and move around to stay alert.
Extra Tips for a Smooth Journey
- Stay Hydrated: Keep a bottle of water handy. Dehydration can cause fatigue and reduce concentration.
- Snack Smart: Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, and granola bars to keep your energy up.
- Entertainment: Download your favorite playlists or audiobooks to make the trip more enjoyable.
- First Aid Kit: Always have a basic first aid kit in your car for any minor emergencies.
- Emergency Kit: Include essentials like a flashlight, extra batteries, a blanket, and basic tools.
- Check Weather Conditions: Look up the weather forecast for your entire route to avoid any surprises.
- Know the Rest Stops: Plan where you can take breaks, especially if you’re traveling with kids or pets.
- Share Driving Duties: If possible, rotate drivers to avoid fatigue.
August Travel: What to Know
August isn’t just busy because of local travelers—expect to see lots of cars with Portuguese and North African plates as well. This international traffic adds to the mix, so patience and caution are key.

With the DGT’s special traffic operation and these handy tips, you’re all set for a safe and enjoyable road trip. Plan ahead, stay aware of peak traffic times, and most importantly, enjoy your summer adventures!
