Rain and Wind Sweep Across Spain This Weekend
This weekend, Spain is bracing for a mix of rain, wind, and even snow as a weather system that arrived on Friday, February 21, continues to move across the country. According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the rain will spread widely, reaching as far as the southern Balearic Islands by Saturday evening. Along with the rain, strong winds and rough seas are expected, particularly in coastal areas, with seven provinces under weather warnings. Galicia, in the northwest, is set to face the worst of it, with heavy rain and strong waves predicted.
Where Will the Rain Be Heaviest?
The rain will be heaviest in the Pyrenees, the Strait of Gibraltar, and along the eastern Cantabrian coast. In some areas, the rain could turn into thunderstorms, with hail possible in places like Galicia and the Cantabrian region. Galicia, especially the provinces of A Coruña, Lugo, and Pontevedra, is under an orange-level warning due to the intensity of the rain and waves. Other areas, including the coasts of Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, are also under warnings for rough seas.
Will It Snow in Spain This Weekend?
For those in mountainous regions, snow is on the way. The Pyrenees could see snow at levels as low as 1,600 meters, while other northern mountains may see snow at 1,300 meters. In the southeast, snow levels will be higher, around 1,800 to 2,200 meters. Light frosts are also expected in high-altitude areas, so if you’re heading to the mountains, be prepared for chilly conditions.
How Will Temperatures Change Across Spain?
Temperatures will vary across the country. In the Mediterranean region, including Valencia, temperatures will rise, with highs of up to 23°C. However, in most other parts of Spain, temperatures will drop, especially in the northwest. Light frosts are likely in mountainous areas and possibly in the northern plateau.
Strong Winds Expected: Which Areas Will Be Affected?
The wind will also play a big role this weekend. Moderate winds from the south and southeast will affect the Balearic Islands and northeastern Spain, with strong gusts possible in areas like Ampurdán and the Pyrenees. In other regions, westerly and southwesterly winds will dominate, with strong intervals expected in Alborán and the Cantabrian Sea.
What Happens After the Weather Front Passes?
Once the weather front passes, skies will gradually clear, but some areas in the west may still see scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in Galicia and the Cantabrian region.
Stay Prepared for a Wet and Windy Weekend
This weekend’s weather will bring a mix of rain, wind, and snow to much of Spain, so it’s a good idea to stay updated on local warnings and be prepared for changing conditions. Whether you’re in the north, south, or somewhere in between, keep an umbrella handy and stay safe!
