Wildfire in Tarifa Forces Mass Evacuation
A fast-moving wildfire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, August 5, near the town of Tarifa in Cádiz, leading to the evacuation of hotels, campsites, beach bars, and around 5,000 vehicles. The fire started around 3:00 pm in a caravan parked near the popular Torre de la Peña campsite and quickly spread due to strong Levante winds.
Hotels, Campsites and Roads Affected
Several hotels including Punta Sur, La Torre, Tres Mares, Copacabana, and Dulce Nombre were evacuated as a safety measure. Campsites like Torre de la Peña and nearby urban areas such as Valdevaqueros, Casas de Porro, and Casas de San Mateo were also affected. Well-known beach bars including El Tumbao and Tangana were emptied as the fire approached.
The N-340 road is currently closed between kilometres 71 and 80 in both directions. A detour is being set up using a secondary road to keep traffic moving and ensure safety.
