Madrid Rally Sends Clear Message Against Trump-Style Politics
The Plaza de Callao in central Madrid was packed this weekend as thousands of people came together to show support for the European Union and its founding values. The rally, held under the slogan ‘In defence of Europe and democracy’, was organised by social groups, unions, and cultural organisations calling for stronger European unity during a time of rising global tension.
Standing together for Europe’s future
Participants waved EU flags and held signs calling for peace, unity, and human rights. The event comes just days after Europe Day (9 May) and follows similar rallies across European capitals, including one in Rome that attracted around 50,000 people.
Speakers at the event highlighted the need to protect democracy, especially as the world faces multiple threats, including Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in the United States, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and ongoing violence in Gaza.
Many warned of the growing influence of authoritarian ideas, both outside and inside the EU. The message was clear: the future of democracy in Europe depends on citizens staying informed and involved.
‘Europe must not be taken for granted’
Well-known figures including journalist Andrea Rizzi, writer Elvira Lindo, and singer Miguel RĂos addressed the crowd. Rizzi warned against underestimating the threats facing Europe: disinformation, war, and economic pressure. ‘This is not just a military or trade war,’ he said. ‘We are also in a war of ideas and truth.’ Elvira Lindo spoke passionately about fighting back against hate and fear.
Anti-Trump message at the heart of the rally
While the demonstration supported the EU, many speakers voiced concern about the return of ‘Trumpism‘, the political style associated with Donald Trump that promotes nationalism, trade wars, and a disregard for democratic norms. These fears were tied to growing far-right movements in Europe and concerns that authoritarian leaders are gaining ground on both sides of the Atlantic.
Citizens call for stronger and fairer Europe
Young people, retirees, civil society leaders and politicians from across the political spectrum attended the event. Some carried signs reading ‘UE: United or defeated‘ and others protested against the war in Gaza.
The demonstration ended with a powerful moment as Miguel RĂos performed the ‘Hymn to Joy,‘ the EU’s official anthem, with the entire plaza joining in. ‘No to war, any war,’ he declared.
As threats grow at home and abroad, many in Madrid sent a strong message: a united and democratic Europe is still worth fighting for.
