Spain’s Autumn Forecast: Expect Warmer Temperatures and Stormy Weather

As we wave goodbye to an exceptionally hot August, September is kicking off with a meteorological rollercoaster. Spain’s weather is in for a bit of a shake-up, with the AEMET (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología) stepping in to give us a heads-up about what to expect in the coming weeks.

Stormy Skies and Sudden Temperature Drops

The weather across Spain has been anything but predictable recently. Following the passage of a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) or cold drop, which caused severe changes in our climate, the country overall has seen intense rainfall and a sharp drop in temperatures. This turbulence is set to continue, with forecasts predicting more storms and heavy showers, particularly in mountainous areas like the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains.

Cloudy Days Ahead

In the days to come, prepare for a blanket of clouds covering much of the country. The central region, the Balearic Islands, and eastern Spain are expected to experience heightened cloud cover, along with sporadic thunderstorms and showers. The northern regions, such as Galicia and Cantabria, will see intensified rainfall due to an Atlantic front moving in. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands will enjoy relatively calm weather, with mostly clear skies and only a few clouds to break up the sunshine.

Unusual Autumn Forecast

This September is already looking unusual. The upcoming autumn is predicted to be warmer than normal, marking a shift from the usual seasonal pattern. Even though Spain will experience a decrease in temperatures, especially around the Mediterranean and the Ebro Valley, the overall warmth of the season is expected to stand out. The AEMET suggests that while this autumn might be drier than usual, occasional rains are still on the cards across various parts of the peninsula.

So, as we step into autumn, brace yourself for a season that’s both warmer and more unpredictable than you might expect. Keep an eye on the skies, and stay prepared for anything Mother Nature throws our way!
