How to view ‘the Comet of the Century’ in Spain

This week in Spain, we’re in for a treat as Comet C/2023 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) approaches Earth, earning it the title of the ‘Comet of the Century.’ This spectacular comet will be visible to the naked eye, making its closest pass to us on October 12, 2024, at around 70 million kilometers away, or half an astronomical unit.

When and Where to Catch a Glimpse

You’ll have two great opportunities to see this comet. From September 27 to September 29, look towards the eastern sky just before dawn. Then, from October 10 to October 12, shift your gaze to the west after sunset. For the best chance to spot the comet during the first window, aim for about 7:50 AM.

What Makes This Comet Special?

C/2023 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) stands out because it’s about 5 kilometers wide and is likely a ‘newborn’ comet, meaning it has a lot of ice on its surface that can easily evaporate. Unlike most comets that follow parabolic orbits, this one has a hyperbolic path, moving in the opposite direction of how planets rotate around the sun, which is pretty exciting for astronomers.

Tips for Watching the Comet

To make the most of your viewing experience, grab some binoculars or a telescope, even though you can see it with your bare eyes. Check the weather beforehand to ensure clear skies. As temperatures drop in October, be sure to dress warmly and consider bringing a blanket or folding chair for comfort. For a little help in locating the comet, try using astronomy apps like Stellarium.

Don’t Miss This Rare Event

From September 27 to mid-October, there’s a fantastic chance to witness this stunning astronomical event. With its brightness and unique features, the Comet of the Century is a must-see for both casual stargazers and astronomy buffs. So, keep your eyes on the sky and enjoy this celestial marvel before it disappears!
