Fatal Explosion in Asturias Mine Leaves Five Dead and Four Injured
A powerful explosion in the Cerredo coal mine, located in Degaña, Asturias, has resulted in the deaths of five workers and left four others seriously injured. The victims, aged between 32 and 54, were from the province of León. Two additional workers managed to escape unharmed.
Possible Cause: Grisú Gas Explosion
Authorities believe the explosion was caused by grisú, a highly flammable gas commonly found in coal mines. The presence of this gas can lead to sudden and devastating explosions when it comes into contact with air. Investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement and mining experts examining the site.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
Emergency services received the first alert at 9:30 a.m. on March 31st, reporting an incident inside the mine. The rescue operation involved multiple teams, including medical helicopters and specialized mine rescue units. The injured workers were transported to different hospitals for treatment. One was airlifted to a hospital in Oviedo, while others were taken to medical facilities in León and Cangas del Narcea.
Community and Government Reactions
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and regional leaders have expressed condolences to the victims’ families. The President of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, also shared his sympathies and support for those affected.

Gracias a los servicios de emergencia que están trabajando en las labores de rescate.
The Dangers of Grisú Gas in Mining
Grisú is primarily composed of methane and is known as a silent threat in coal mines due to its colorless and odorless nature. It accumulates in pockets within the mine and can ignite with a single spark. Proper ventilation and continuous monitoring are crucial to preventing such disasters.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing to analyze the circumstances of the explosion. The mine, previously closed due to European restrictions but later reopened by private companies, was being used for anthracite extraction and potential graphite production. The tragic accident highlights the persistent risks associated with mining operations and the importance of stringent safety measures.
