Sudden Heat Storm Hits Costa Tropical

In just minutes, the normally calm skies over Costa Tropical, Granada, turned dark and stormy. Around 7:20 pm on August 17, the temperature suddenly rose, and strong, almost hurricane-like winds blew across the coast. People enjoying a peaceful day at the beach in Carchuna, Torrenueva, Motril, and Salobreña were caught off guard. Umbrellas and other light objects were lifted into the air, creating confusion and alarm. The Andalucía 112 emergency center received more than twenty calls from people needing help, and local authorities quickly advised that beaches be evacuated.

Rescues at Sea

Reports came in from Torrenueva Costa around 7:45 p.m., warning of possible small tornadoes or waterspouts, though this was not confirmed. Emergency teams received multiple calls from beachgoers and people at sea who were stranded, including people on paddleboards and kayaks near Motril, Salobreña, and Torrenueva Costa. While no injuries have been confirmed so far, officials warn this could change as reports from local beach teams are still coming in.

Officials Advise Caution

Local officials advised residents to stay indoors until the storm passes. They explained that this type of event is a “dry storm” or “sudden heat storm,” which brings high temperatures and strong winds. Authorities urge people to avoid open spaces and take precautions to stay safe.

Rescue Teams Survey the Coast

Rescue teams are checking the coastline for hazards. Floating objects like mattresses and paddleboards have drifted as far as three miles from the shore, creating risks for boats and swimmers.

What is a Sudden Heat Storm?

A sudden heat storm happens when collapsing thunderstorms push very hot, dry air downward. This can make the temperature rise quickly and create strong, gusty winds in a short period of time.

Safety Tips:

  • Stay indoors if possible
  • Avoid beaches or open areas with blowing sand
  • Protect pets and plants from extreme heat and wind
