Serena Williams Wins 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports

Serena Williams has been awarded the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The decision was announced on Wednesday, May 28, in Oviedo by the jury, which met over two days to select the winner from 30 candidates representing 13 countries.

A career full of titles and firsts

Born in Michigan in 1981, Serena won her first Grand Slam at the US Open in 1999. She retired from tennis in 2022 after a remarkable career, collecting 73 titles, including 23 Grand Slams, just one behind Novak Djokovic for the most in the Open Era. She also earned four Olympic gold medals: one in singles in London and three in doubles with her sister Venus in Sydney, Beijing, and London.

More than just a tennis player

Known for her powerful game and mental toughness, Serena has broken barriers in the world of sports. Beyond her athletic achievements, she’s a strong voice for gender equality, fighting for equal opportunities in sports and society. The jury highlighted both her sporting success and her commitment to making a difference off the court.

Following in the footsteps of other greats

Serena follows Spanish badminton star Carolina Marín, the 2024 winner, and joins a list of past recipients that includes Rafa Nadal, the Spanish national football team, Pau and Marc Gasol, Fernando Alonso, and the New Zealand rugby team.

A lasting impact on and off the court

From winning the Australian Open while pregnant in 2017 to lifting her final trophy in Auckland in 2020, Serena’s journey has inspired millions. Her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time, and as a role model for future generations, is now recognised with one of Spain’s most prestigious international honours.
