Spain-Morocco Underwater Tunnel planned for 2030
Spain and Morocco continue to take steps towards the future construction of a tunnel that would connect the two countries beneath the Strait of Gibraltar. This monumental project, if completed, is on course to become one of the greatest feats of civil engineering in history. The recent decision by representatives of both governments to reinvigorate the project highlights their commitment to it.
If completed in the timeline put forward it would be ready in time for the 2030 World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will be co-hosts for the 24th FIFA World Cup.
Revitalizing a Strategic Project
During the Spain-Morocco Summit held in Rabat, Raquel Sánchez, Spain‘s Minister of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda (Mitma), emphasized the significance of advancing the studies for the Fixed Link Project of the Strait of Gibraltar. Sánchez highlighted the project’s strategic importance for both Spain and Morocco, as well as for Europe and Africa.
A Shared Vision
Echoing Sánchez’s sentiments, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch expressed optimism about the potential of the tunnel project. The joint commitment to reinitiate discussions on the tunnel underscores the renewed diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Financial and Strategic Considerations
The proposed tunnel, spanning approximately 17 miles underwater, holds immense promise for facilitating transportation and trade between Europe and Africa. Estimates suggest it could accommodate millions of passengers annually and significantly reduce travel times between major cities.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite its potential benefits, the tunnel project poses considerable engineering challenges. The rugged terrain of the Strait of Gibraltar, coupled with seismic activity in the region, means putting in place meticulous planning and innovative solutions.
As Spain and Morocco continue to forge ahead with plans for the underwater tunnel beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, anticipation mounts for the potential transformation it could bring to the region. With the backdrop of the upcoming 2030 World Cup, discussions surrounding the tunnel gain added significance, as it could potentially serve as a vital transportation link for the event.
