Rain and Cold Snap Hit Spain: Here’s What to Expect
February is kicking off with a mix of rain, snow, and frost across Spain. While some areas will stay dry and calm, others are in for a wet and chilly weekend. Here’s a breakdown of what’s coming and where you’ll need to bundle up or grab an umbrella.
Rain and Storms Target the North and Balearic Islands
A low-pressure system is moving in, bringing rain to the northern and northeastern parts of Spain. The Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca, will see the worst of it, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even some hail. The eastern coast, including Melilla, could also get a soaking.
Meanwhile, most of the rest of the country will enjoy clear skies and stable weather. But don’t put away your winter gear just yet, cold temperatures and frost are still on the cards for many areas.
Snow Alert for the Northeast and Pyrenees
If you’re in the mountains of the northeast or Mallorca, expect snow. The snowline will start around 1,000 to 1,200 meters but could drop as low as 600 meters in some areas. Significant snow accumulations are likely in parts of Aragón and Cataluña, with weather warnings in place for Huesca, Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida.
Temperatures Take a Tumble
Temperatures will vary depending on where you are. The northeast and Balearic Islands will see a drop in maximum temperatures, while the Atlantic coast and southern Mediterranean areas will warm up a bit. Overnight frost will continue to affect northern and southeastern mountain regions, with Soria and Teruel expected to hit lows of -3°C.
Strong Winds Hit Coastal Areas
Strong winds are also on the way, particularly in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Coastal areas in Girona, Melilla, and several Canary Islands are under wind and wave warnings, so be cautious if you’re near the coast.
Whether you’re dealing with rain, snow, or frost, February weather in Spain is keeping everyone on their toes. Keep an eye on local forecasts and stay warm as the weather shifts across the country.
