Spain’s 2025 Bank Holiday Calendar: What to Expect by Region
With the upcoming year around the corner, Spain‘s regional governments are already approving their 2025 public holiday calendars. As always, the country will observe 14 paid, mandatory holidays, of which 12 are national and regional, while the remaining two are set locally by each municipality. Let’s dive into what this means for residents and workers across Spain in 2025.
National Holidays for 2025
There are nine national holidays that are obligatory for all autonomous communities. These include well-known dates like New Year’s Day (January 1), Good Friday (April 18), Labor Day (May 1), Assumption of the Virgin (August 15), and Christmas (December 25). Some of these dates can be moved if they fall on Sundays, allowing regions to choose alternative days.
Optional Holidays by Region
Some holidays, such as Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day (January 6), Holy Thursday (April 17), and St. Joseph’s Day/ Father’s Day (March 19), are optional for regions. Communities like AndalucÃa, Aragón, and Extremadura have already made their choices, creating several long weekends for its residents.
Key Changes in 2025
This year will see a couple of unique shifts. November 1 (All Saints’ Day) and December 6 (Constitution Day) both fall on Saturdays, which means many workers might miss out on these extra days off. Additionally, regions like the Balearic Islands and Galicia will celebrate their local holidays on Saturdays, which could also impact holiday planning for locals.
Long Weekends to Enjoy
There will be a few opportunities for long weekends. For instance, January 6 (Epiphany) and December 8 (Immaculate Conception) both fall on Mondays, offering two nationwide long weekends. In certain regions, such as Madrid, residents can enjoy extended holidays in May, combining Labor Day with Community of Madrid Day (May 2).
Spain’s bank holiday calendar continues to balance national traditions with regional preferences, providing a mix of long weekends and public festivities throughout the year.
