Spain’s Upcoming Weather Forecast Explained

Spain started the week with warm, settled weather, though a few storms popped up in the north and east. That calm won’t last long. From Wednesday, August 27, onwards, a shift in the weather will move in from the northwest, bringing rain, storms, and a noticeable drop in temperatures.

Midweek Storms and Rain

Between Wednesday and Friday, August 27-29, showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across much of the country. The north and northeast will see the worst of it, especially Aragón, Cataluña, the upper Ebro and the Pyrenees. Storms may also reach Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian interior and the Balearic Islands.

Some could be intense, with hail, strong winds and heavy downpours. On Wednesday, orange alerts are in place for Huesca, Zaragoza, Teruel, Lleida and Castellón. Authorities are advising people to take extra care on the roads and to keep an eye on local forecasts.

Temperatures Drop Before Rising Again

The storms will be followed by a much cooler air mass from the northwest. Temperatures are set to fall sharply midweek, dropping by as much as 6 to 8ºC in parts of Galicia, Castilla y León and the Ebro valley.

Thursday will likely be the coolest day, with many areas struggling to reach 30ºC. But by the weekend, the heat will return, especially in the south. Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Valencia, and Andalucía could once again see highs above 35ºC.

The Role of Ex-Hurricane Erin

This shift in the weather is partly down to the remnants of Hurricane Erin. While the storm has weakened and is heading towards the UK and Ireland, some of its energy and fronts will brush Spain. Combined with a trough of cold air in the upper atmosphere, this will create the unstable conditions expected midweek.

What Jorge Rey Predicts

Jorge Rey, a young traditional weather expert from Burgos, has become well-known in Spain for using the traditional cabañuelas method to forecast the weather. Although he’s not an official meteorologist, his posts often spark debate and attract thousands of followers online.

This week, Rey is warning of a ‘radical change’ in conditions. He predicts stronger winds, heavy storms in the north and northeast, and a sudden cool-down that will make it feel more like autumn. He also suggests the unsettled pattern may continue, with the heat bouncing back quickly afterwards, especially in the south.

AEMET’s Forecast for September

Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, also expects a busy start to September. The first week should bring near-normal temperatures, a little cooler in the northwest. From September 8th to the 14th, however, eastern Spain is likely to be warmer than average.

Rainfall is harder to pin down, but AEMET warns that the atmosphere is very active, which means sudden changes are possible. They point to more fronts moving in during September, with alternating spells of rain, storms, cool weather and hot spells.

After a summer of heatwaves and wildfires, this more changeable pattern could bring some relief, but it may also keep people on their toes as the season shifts.
