Storm Garoé: Four Days of Intense Rain

Spain is bracing for a major change in weather as Storm Garoé moves across the country. This will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and snow to the higher mountains. Garoé, the seventh named storm of the season, will end the recent dry spell, making way for a period of intense rainfall over the next four days.

Heavy Rainfall and Snow in the Coming Days

Starting today, Monday, January 20, heavy rain will spread across much of Spain, with the southwest—particularly Extremadura and western Andalucía, experiencing the worst of it. These areas could see up to 70 liters of rain per square meter in just 12 hours. The storm will also bring some snow to the higher mountain ranges, but the warmer winds from the south will keep temperatures up in most areas. While Monday’s rain has already started to fall, Tuesday will bring even more widespread precipitation.

Intense Weather Ahead in Spain

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warns that Storm Garoé will create a significant change in the weather. For the next few days, Spain will experience continuous rain, storms, and very strong winds. By Wednesday, large parts of the country will have accumulated heavy rainfall, with some areas expecting up to 200mm. For example, Huelva has already recorded 60mm of rain, and more is expected across the region.

Weather Will Gradually Ease Later in the Week

While conditions will remain intense through Wednesday, the storm is expected to weaken by Thursday. However, lighter showers and cooler temperatures will continue, especially in the northern and central regions. Areas like northern Cáceres and western Andalucía are forecast to see up to 220mm of rain. As the storm weakens, the weather will slowly improve, but Spain will experience a clear drop in temperature by the end of the week.
