Storm Nuria Brings Destruction Across Spain: Tornado in Sevilla Claims Lives

Storm Nuria has unleashed severe weather across Spain, bringing heavy rain, intense winds, and hail to various parts of the country. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued yellow weather alerts for nine regions, with the storm particularly impacting the southwest. The powerful storm is expected to continue causing disruption as it moves across the Iberian Peninsula.

Widespread Weather Warnings Across Spain

Storm Nuria has been especially harsh in southern and western Spain. AEMET has warned that certain areas may experience up to 50 liters of rain per square meter in just 12 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas. Regions like Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, and Extremadura are under yellow alert, with Castilla y León and the Valencian Community also facing storms and heavy rain. Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Cataluña, and the Basque Country are experiencing warnings for high winds.

The storm, which began in the Canary Islands, has now reached the mainland, causing widespread concern.

The Canary Islands Hit First: Winds and Rain Cause Major Disruption

On Thursday, April 3, Storm Nuria battered the Canary Islands, bringing torrential rain and wind gusts up to 130 km/h. In La Palma, the authorities issued a red warning for extreme weather as winds ripped through the island. Nuria’s effects were felt across the region, and the storm has now moved on to mainland Spain, where the weather continues to worsen.

Tornado Strikes Sevilla, Leaving Tragic Loss in Its Wake

On Friday, April 4, the storm brought severe conditions to Sevilla, where a tornado tragically caused the collapse of a farm building in Coria del Río. The devastating incident resulted in the death of at least three workers, who were trapped inside when the roof was torn off by the high winds. Emergency services rushed to the scene to help, but the damage was already severe.

This tragic event highlights the extreme and unpredictable nature of Storm Nuria, which has already caused flooding and significant disruption in the region.

Flooding, Strong Winds, and More Disruption in Southern Spain

Storm Nuria has caused flooding and transport disruptions across southern Spain. In Cádiz, heavy rain has submerged streets and delayed ferry services, particularly in the port of Tarifa, where all sailings to Tangier were suspended. In Lanzarote and La Graciosa, the storm has caused power outages, with incidents like a power pole being knocked over and a pergola being torn apart by the winds.

Other towns, including Gerena, Villanueva del Río, and Coria del Río, are dealing with rising river levels. Flooding has created dangerous conditions, with several roads closed and the risk of more water damage.

Madrid and Other Regions Hit with Snow and Rain

In Madrid, Storm Nuria brought snow to the Sierra de Guadarrama, an unusual sight for April. The snow is accumulating in higher areas like Cotos and Navacerrada, while heavy rain has affected the rest of the region. Snowfall is expected to continue in the mountains, with warnings for hazardous driving conditions on mountain roads.

Throughout the rest of the region, significant rainfall has caused localized flooding, and authorities are keeping a close watch on river levels to prevent any further disasters.

What to Expect This Weekend

While the storm is expected to ease by Sunday, conditions remain volatile, especially in the south. More heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible, and hail could continue to affect some areas. AEMET is maintaining yellow alerts in regions with the highest risks, urging people to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

The situation remains critical, and authorities continue to warn residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

A Time for Caution and Preparation

Storm Nuria has already caused widespread damage and loss of life, with Sevilla’s tornado serving as a tragic reminder of the storm’s power. Strong winds, heavy rain, and the threat of more flooding have made this one of the most severe weather events of the year.

It’s vital for people in affected areas to follow safety guidelines, stay up-to-date with weather reports, and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. As the storm continues to move through Spain, the priority remains the safety of residents and minimizing further damage.
