Tragedy at Lleida Train Station: One Dead, One Injured After Electrocution
A shocking incident at Lleida train station on Tuesday evening, January 28, left one person dead and another seriously injured after they attempted to climb onto the roof of a high-speed Alvia train. According to reports, the two people came into contact with the train’s overhead power line, which carries 27,000 volts. One person was electrocuted, and their body reportedly caught fire, while the other fell onto the tracks, suffering severe burns.
The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. after authorities detected several people entering restricted areas of the station. Investigators believe the pair may have jumped from a pedestrian walkway onto the train’s roof, though their motives remain unclear. Witnesses described hearing screams as the injured person fell onto the tracks. Earlier in the day, the two individuals had reportedly been causing disturbances at the station, including an attempt to board another train without tickets.
The affected train, traveling from La Coruña to Barcelona, was forced to stop on track 2, leaving 185 passengers stranded for over an hour. Power to the station was cut as a safety precaution, preventing the train doors from opening until emergency crews could safely evacuate everyone. Passengers were eventually transferred to alternative road transport to continue their journey.
The incident disrupted long- and medium-distance trains arriving at Lleida station, though trains passing through the station were not affected. An investigation is underway to determine how they accessed the restricted area and why they attempted to climb onto the train.
Local authorities, including the Mossos d’Esquadra and firefighters, responded quickly to the scene, but the tragedy has raised concerns about security measures at the station. The station remains in chaos as officials work to restore normal operations and piece together the events that led to this devastating outcome.
