AEMET Warns of Major Weather Shift in Spain

The Spanish weather agency AEMET has warned about a significant shift in the weather as an Atlantic storm front moves in. This will bring a sharp drop in temperatures and rain in many parts of the country. The shift follows the passing of a DANA (isolated depression at high levels), which has recently caused flooding. Most of Spain will start to calm down, but some areas are still expected to get heavy rain.

Cold Fronts and Storms Expected

In the coming days, Spain is likely to face a series of weather events that could bring a substantial drop in temperatures, heavy rain, and even snow in some areas. The AEMET has issued warnings for regions, especially in the Canary Islands and the northern parts of the country. The forecast predicts a marked shift as autumn takes a backseat, giving way to early winter conditions.

Weather in Spain: Key Areas to Watch

The AEMET’s weather forecast for specific regions includes:

  • Canary Islands: Expect strong, persistent rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in the higher terrain.
  • Ampurdán: A strong tramontana wind will be felt, with cold gusts impacting the region. The tramontana is a strong, cold, and dry northerly wind that blows across the Mediterranean, particularly in regions like northeastern Spain, southern France, and Italy. It typically originates from the Alps or other northern European mountain ranges, bringing cold air down through the Iberian Peninsula, especially in areas like Cataluña. The tramontana can cause significant drops in temperature, and its effects are often felt more intensely in coastal areas and mountains. The wind is known for its ability to clear the skies, leading to crisp, clear days, but it can also create uncomfortable conditions due to its strength and chill.
  • Galicia and Northern Spain: Dense morning fog is expected, potentially lasting through midday, with occasional light showers across some areas.

Wind and Temperature Shifts

Alongside the rain, the wind will play a significant role in increasing the chill. Winds from the north will bring cooler conditions to the Pyrenees and parts of Cataluña, while lighter winds will dominate the rest of the peninsula. The AEMET predicts a general decrease in daytime temperatures, particularly in the mountainous regions, with the potential for weak frost in the Pyrenees.

Weather in Spain: How to Prepare

Residents and travelers in these regions should be aware of the changing weather patterns and stay updated with real-time weather forecasts. The unpredictability of this weather shift reminds us to be cautious and plan for the cold, especially as we transition into what could be an early winter in some parts of Spain.

As the days unfold, it’s essential to stay informed and adjust daily plans to avoid the impact of these unpredictable weather events.
