AEMET Issues Heat Alert as Spain Faces Scorching Weekend
Spain is bracing for another intense heatwave, with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warning of temperatures well above normal for this time of year. After a few cooler days, the heat is returning quickly and will peak over the weekend.
Temperatures to Rise 5 to 10 Degrees Above Average
From Thursday, June 5, temperatures began rising across much of the country, and they will continue to go up on Friday and into the weekend. In many areas, the heat will be 5 to 10 degrees above average for this time of year, with highs reaching 35°C to 40°C in several regions.
Most of the country saw clear skies on Thursday, though some light rain was reported in the north and eastern Canary Islands. Cloudy skies and weak showers also affected parts of Galicia and the Cantabrian coast.
Southern Cities Among the Hottest
Maximum temperatures will increase almost everywhere. In southern Spain, the valleys of Andalucía will be particularly hot, reaching 35°C. Some cooler air will remain along the eastern coast, while the Canary Islands will see little change. Minimum night-time temperatures will also rise in the southern half of the peninsula.
Among the hottest cities this week are expected to be:
- Seville: 34°C
- Córdoba: 33°C
- Granada and Murcia: 32°C
Stable Weather on Friday with Rising Heat
Friday will bring more dry and stable weather for most of the country. Some showers may still fall in Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, and mountain areas in the north and east. Daytime temperatures will continue to climb, especially in the northeast, central Spain, and the Balearic Islands, with many places exceeding 30–32°C. In the Valley of the Guadalquivir and parts of Castilla-La Mancha, 34–36°C is likely.
Over 40°C Expected in Andalucía on Sunday
The heat will peak over the weekend. While northern coastal areas like the Cantabrian region will see cooler temperatures and rain, most of Spain will be hot and sunny. On Saturday, temperatures above 34°C are forecast in southern and eastern areas, including Valencia, Murcia, and Andalucía.
By Sunday, June 8, the east of the peninsula will see some relief as temperatures dip slightly. However, in the west and south, the heat will intensify, and much of the southern half of Spain will exceed 35°C. In Córdoba and Sevilla, temperatures could top 40°C, making it the hottest day of this episode.
