A significant cold front is sweeping across Spain, bringing with it the season’s first snowfall in certain regions. The cold air mass moving down from the north will lead to temperatures dropping sharply, especially in the Pyrenees, where up to 30 cm (12 inches) of snow is expected between October 17 and 18.

Cold Snap to Hit Northern and Eastern Spain

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has forecast a temperature drop of 6-8°C across northern and eastern Spain, with the coldest conditions predicted in cities like Burgos and Soria, where temperatures will peak at just 13°C. Ávila, Cuenca, Lugo, and Segovia will also experience chilly conditions, with highs of around 14°C. In contrast, southern regions like Murcia will remain warmer, with temperatures reaching 28°C.

Snow Blankets the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees have already seen snowfall from altitudes of 1,900-2,000 meters, with heavier snow now accumulating at lower levels, down to 1,800 meters. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees, where up to 30 cm of snow may accumulate overnight into October 18.

Warnings for Rain, Wind, and Rough Seas

Besides snow, several regions remain on alert for heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas. The northern coast, including areas like Cantabria and the Basque Country, continues to face rainfall, while Mediterranean coastal areas, particularly in Almería and Castellón, are bracing for winds up to 80 km/h.

While the weather remains unsettled, a gradual improvement is expected by the weekend.
