Weekend weather across Spain: rain, wind and a taste of autumn

A new Atlantic front is sweeping across Spain this weekend, bringing the kind of weather that makes you reach for your coat and umbrella. According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Friday, November 7, marks the start of a wet and windy few days, with heavy rain, strong gusts, and cooler temperatures across much of the country. The change will be especially noticeable after several weeks of mild “veroño” (late summer-like) weather, reminding everyone that autumn has finally taken hold.

Galicia takes the brunt

The heaviest rainfall is expected in Galicia, especially in the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra, where showers could turn stormy at times with thunder, hail and strong winds along the coast. Some areas could see significant rainfall totals by the end of the day, prompting AEMET to advise caution on the roads and in exposed areas. Northern Galicia may also see gusts powerful enough to cause minor coastal damage or travel delays, spreading later to the Cantabrian coastline as the system moves east. Skies will stay grey throughout the day with rain that’s likely to persist into the weekend, making it one of the wettest spells so far this autumn.

Rain spreads across the country

Elsewhere, showers will become more widespread as the front moves inland, reaching much of the interior and mountainous regions of the north. Castilla y León, Asturias and parts of Aragón could see steady rainfall, while the south-east, including Murcia and Almería, will experience lighter, patchier showers. In these areas, the rain will be more of a passing inconvenience than a washout. Over in the Canary Islands, the outlook is more settled, though clouds are expected to thicken in the north of the islands with the chance of light drizzle, carried by moderate trade winds that could pick up in exposed spots.

Autumn chill and first signs of snow

Temperatures are dropping everywhere, with most northern regions staying below 18°C during the day and some areas in the mountains barely reaching 12°C. Early morning fog and damp evenings will make it feel properly autumnal, and AEMET has warned of possible light frosts in the Pyrenees and higher parts of the north. Videos shared online this week already show the first snows, a beautiful reminder that winter is just around the corner. Ski enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that this early snowfall has started to whiten the slopes of the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees, a sign that the ski season could be off to a timely start if temperatures continue to drop in the coming weeks.

A weekend to stay cosy

With strong winds, scattered storms and a noticeable drop in temperature, it’s a good weekend to keep plans flexible and dress for the weather. Galicia and the northern coast will see the worst of it, but most of Spain will feel the shift to a cooler, wetter season. Morning walks might come with a misty backdrop, and the sound of rain will be a steady weekend companion for many.

So whether you’re out braving the elements or watching the showers roll in from the comfort of home, there’s no doubt, autumn has well and truly arrived in Spain.

Even in the warm south of Spain, there’s now a noticeable chill in the air. It’s still lovely out in the sun during the day, but once it dips behind the horizon, the cooler evenings make their presence felt. It’s time to pull the duvets back onto the beds, even in the sunny south of Spain.
