Spain Shines in the 2024 World’s 50 Best Restaurants List
The announcement of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2024 has reaffirmed Spain’s position as a leader in global fine dining. With six restaurants making the prestigious list – including three in the top five – Spain’s culinary scene has never been more celebrated.
These awards, often referred to as the Oscars of the culinary world, were presented during a glamorous event at the Wynn in Las Vegas. Barcelona’s Disfrutar claimed the coveted top spot, a rise from its number two ranking last year. The restaurant is helmed by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casanas, who previously honed their skills at the legendary El Bulli. Their inventive dishes, such as the caviar-filled Panchino doughnut, the frozen gazpacho sandwich, and squab with kombu spaghetti, almond, and grape, have captivated the culinary world.
Spain’s Stellar Lineup
1. Disfrutar (Barcelona)
Taking the number one spot, Disfrutar has firmly established itself as the pinnacle of fine dining. The restaurant is renowned for its avant-garde approach and creative presentation, making every meal a memorable experience.
2. Asador Etxebarri (Atxondo)
Coming in at number two was Asador Etxebarri of Atxondo, not far from the Spanish port city of Bilbao. Under the leadership of chef Victor Arguinzoniz, it’s famed for offering unbeatable barbecue that lets the quality of the ingredients shine. Signature dishes include the simply grilled red Palamós prawn, which is served on its own, allowing the natural flavors to be the star.
4. Diverxo (Madrid)
Madrid’s Diverxo took the fourth spot. This restaurant, led by the visionary chef Dabiz Muñoz, is known for its bold and eclectic menu. Muñoz’s culinary approach is described as ‘brutally creative,’ combining global flavors with cutting-edge techniques. Diverxo’s unique dining experience is set to become even more exclusive with its upcoming relocation to La Finca, an elite urbanization.
14. Quique Dacosta (Denia)
Quique Dacosta, located in Denia, ascended to the 14th position from the 20th last year. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and artistic presentations, Chef Quique Dacosta creates a dining experience that is as visually stunning as it is delicious.
19. Reale (Castel di Sangro)
Although not traditionally Spanish, Reale in Castel di Sangro, helmed by Chef Niko Romito, has a significant influence from Spain, reflecting the broader culinary excellence of the region.
28. Elkano (Getaria)
Elkano in Getaria slipped from 22nd to 28th this year. Known for its expertise in seafood, particularly grilled fish, Elkano remains a must-visit for those exploring Basque cuisine.
Spain’s Dominance in Fine Dining
Securing six restaurants on the list was enough to make Spain the biggest winner of the night in Vegas. This impressive feat highlights the country’s dedication to culinary excellence and innovation. Spanish cuisine’s diversity, from the molecular gastronomy of Disfrutar to the traditional grilling methods at Asador Etxebarri, showcases the country’s broad culinary skills.
The Rest of the World’s Top Restaurants
While Spain dominated the top spots, other global culinary destinations also made significant impressions. Paris and Bangkok each had four restaurants on the list, with Gaggan Anand at number nine being the Thai capital’s top entry. The US had two entries, with New York City’s Atomix rising to the sixth spot and SingleThread in California placing 47th.
