Xabi Alonso Named New Real Madrid Coach
The former midfielder returns to the Bernabéu, signing until 2028, and will lead the team at the Club World Cup this summer.
Real Madrid Act Quickly After Ancelotti’s Exit
Real Madrid didn’t wait long to announce their new head coach. Just one day after confirming Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, the club made it official: Xabi Alonso is the new manager of the team. The move had been expected for weeks, with hints dropped by Ancelotti and several players. Alonso will be presented this Monday, May 26, and has signed a contract until June 2028.
Alonso’s First Test: The Club World Cup in the USA
His first challenge will be the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts on June 14 in the United States. The squad is coming off a mixed season, lifting only the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Alonso takes over a group that’s talented but tired, and in need of a fresh spark.
A Brilliant Coaching Start in Germany
Alonso arrives after three excellent years at Bayer Leverkusen. He led the team to its first-ever Bundesliga title, plus wins in the German Cup and Super Cup. His calm leadership and smart tactics earned him the title of the most successful manager in the club’s history.
Linked to Liverpool Before Madrid Call Came
Before his move to Madrid, Alonso had also been closely linked to the Liverpool job. As a former player at Anfield, many fans hoped he would return to manage the Reds after Jürgen Klopp’s departure. But once Arne Slot was officially named as Liverpool’s new head coach, Alonso’s path to Madrid became clear. His strong connection to Liverpool could still play a role at Real Madrid, with the likely arrival of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer. Though not yet confirmed, the deal is expected to go through soon.
A Hero Returns to the Bernabéu
Xabi Alonso is no stranger to Real Madrid. He played for the club between 2009 and 2014, making 236 appearances. In that time, he won the long-awaited Décima (10th European Cup), one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey trophies, and both the Spanish and European Super Cups. Known for his vision, leadership, and passing ability, he was a fan favourite during his playing days.
A Big Job Ahead for Alonso
Now he returns to a club with high expectations. Alonso will need to guide a squad that still includes big names like Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham. Despite Mbappé winning the Golden Boot, the attack hasn’t fully clicked this year. Alonso must also develop younger players like Camavinga, Güler, and Endrick, while rebuilding a defence hit hard by injuries.
Farewells and New Faces
Luka Modric and Lucas Vázquez are expected to play their final games for Madrid at the Club World Cup. Meanwhile, Alonso will welcome young defender Dean Huijsen, and, if confirmed, Trent Alexander-Arnold, bringing with him Premier League experience and strong attacking skills from Liverpool.
With deep roots at Real Madrid, Alonso’s return feels like a full-circle moment. Now, it’s time to see if he can bring the same success as a manager as he did on the pitch.
