Spring Forward: When Do the Clocks Change in Spain?

It’s that time of year again! On Sunday, March 30, 2025, Spain will spring forward one hour for daylight saving time. At 2:00 a.m., the clocks will jump to 3:00 a.m. (In the Canary Islands, 1:00 a.m. will become 2:00 a.m.). Yes, you’ll lose an hour of sleep, but on the bright side, longer evenings are back!

Why Do We Change the Clocks?

The idea behind daylight saving time is simple: more daylight in the evening means we use less artificial light, potentially saving energy. Plus, who doesn’t love longer, brighter evenings for strolling, dining outdoors, or just feeling like the day isn’t over at 6 p.m.?

The Good, The Bad, and The Sleep-Deprived

Let’s be honest—not everyone loves the time change. Sure, it’s great for after-work plans, but try telling that to:

  • Babies and toddlers – If you have little ones, you already know what’s coming. Their delicate internal clocks don’t care about daylight saving time. Suddenly, bedtime turns into a battle, nap schedules go out the window, and your normally well-rested child transforms into a tiny, overtired gremlin. Parents, stock up on coffee, you’re going to need it!
  • Pets – Your dog doesn’t understand why breakfast is suddenly an hour late. Prepare for some judgmental stares and maybe a protest paw on your lap.
  • Anyone working the night shift – You technically work an hour less, but your body won’t thank you for the change.
  • That one friend who will absolutely forget – Expect them to show up an hour late to brunch.

The Best Things About Springtime in Spain

The upside? Spain in spring is absolutely magical. With the days getting longer and the weather warming up, here’s why this is one of the best times of year to be here:

1. Beach Season Begins

Okay, maybe the sea is still a bit chilly, but that doesn’t stop people from heading to the coast to soak up the sun. The beaches are far less crowded than in summer, and you can enjoy a peaceful walk along the shore before the peak tourist season kicks in.

2. Terrace Season Is in Full Swing

Spanish people love their outdoor cafés and bars, and now is the perfect time to grab a seat outside. Whether it’s a morning coffee with the sun on your face or a late-night drink with friends, spring is when terraces truly come alive.

3. Spectacular Spring Festivals

Spain loves a good festival, and spring is packed with them:

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week) – One of Spain’s most famous religious celebrations, with stunning processions in cities like Sevilla, Málaga, and Valladolid.
  • Feria de Abril (Sevilla) – Flamenco, horses, and non-stop dancing. Get ready to party Andalucían style!

4. Perfect Hiking Weather

Before the summer heat kicks in, spring is the ideal time to explore Spain’s incredible hiking trails:

  • Caminito del Rey (Málaga) – A breathtaking walkway through a gorge. Not for the faint-hearted!
  • Picos de Europa (Asturias/Cantabria/León) – Stunning mountain views and lush greenery.
  • Teide National Park (Tenerife) – If you want something a bit different, hike up a volcano!

So, while losing an hour of sleep isn’t ideal, think of it as a small price to pay for longer, sunnier days. Set those clocks forward, grab your sunglasses, and enjoy springtime in Spain!
