One Year in Prison for Racist Abuse Towards Vinícius and Chukwueze
A football fan has been sentenced to one year in prison and banned from attending stadiums for three years following racist insults aimed at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Junior and Villarreal’s Samu Chukwueze. These incidents occurred during two separate LaLiga matches at Son Moix Stadium in February 2023.
Two Incidents of Racist Abuse
The first incident took place on February 5, 2023, when RCD Mallorca played Real Madrid. Vinícius Junior was the target of racist insults from a Mallorca fan during the match. Just 13 days later, on February 18, the same individual directed similar insults at Villarreal’s Samu Chukwueze during another LaLiga match at the same stadium.
Legal Consequences and Penalties
The fan was sentenced to six months in prison and 18 months banned from stadiums for each incident, totaling one year in prison and a three-year stadium ban. The court took into account the defendant’s apology to the players and his expression of remorse in reducing the severity of the sentence. He must also complete an anti-discrimination program as part of his rehabilitation.
LaLiga’s Fight Against Racism
LaLiga, which filed the complaints, welcomed the court’s decision, seeing it as a significant step forward in its efforts to combat racism in football. League president Javier Tebas stated that racist chants in football stadiums will not go unpunished: ‘We’ve worked hard to eliminate hate from football, and we will continue this fight.’
