Severe Weather Hits Spain: Red Alerts in Effect, Flooding and Disruptions Across the Country
Spain has been battered by a powerful storm, bringing heavy rain, snow, and strong winds, with weather warnings in place for several regions. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued orange alerts for Valencia, Andalucía, and Cataluña today, and red alerts for Ronda, Málaga, and southern Castellón due to the extreme weather conditions.
Flooding and Fatalities Across Regions
The storm has caused significant flooding across several parts of Spain. In Murcia, a 50-year-old man tragically lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in Lorca. His body was found on Monday morning, March 3, near the mouth of the Rambla Ramonete. Emergency teams are still responding to the storm’s impact, with the risk of more floods as rain continues overnight.
In Gran Canaria, particularly in Telde, flooding has caused severe disruptions after 32 liters of rain fell in just one hour. The heavy rain overwhelmed streets, leaving homes submerged, and led to a series of rescues. Additionally, the collapse of a reservoir wall in Arucas caused even more flooding, putting residents at further risk.

Red Alerts and School Closures
Aemet has kept red alerts in place for several areas, including Ronda and Málaga, where water levels continue to rise. In Valencia, schools have already been closed for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4, and many public facilities, such as parks, gardens, and cemeteries, will remain shut. The city has been on high alert throughout the day and expects more rainfall, potentially reaching up to 150 mm in the next 24 hours.

Storm’s Ongoing Impact on Events and Sports
The storm has forced the suspension of several events today. In Castellón, the football match between Villarreal and Espanyol at Estadio de la Cerámica was called off due to flooding concerns. Although the stadium itself remained intact, the surrounding area was deemed unsafe. Similarly, Fallas festival activities in Valencia were postponed as authorities feared additional flooding and strong winds would make outdoor events dangerous.
Looking Ahead: Weather to Persist into Tuesday
As we head into Tuesday, the storm shows no signs of easing. Aemet warns that heavy rain could continue overnight, particularly in Valencia and Castellón, where rainfall amounts of 100 mm in 12 hours have already been recorded. Severe weather is expected to persist well into Tuesday afternoon, with strong winds and possible further flooding, especially in the northeastern and southern regions. Residents are advised to stay informed and avoid unnecessary travel.
With the worst of the storm expected to continue through the night and into tomorrow, Spain remains on high alert. Authorities are urging caution as heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding cause ongoing disruptions. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
