Another Storm on the Way: What to Expect from Konrad

Just as Spain recovers from Storm Jana, another powerful weather system is on its way. Storm Konrad, named by Portugal’s meteorological service, is set to bring widespread rain, snow, and strong winds across the country in the coming days. The Spanish meteorological agency (AEMET) has issued warnings for several regions.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across the Country

Starting Thursday, March 13, Storm Konrad will bring persistent rain to most of Spain, including the Balearic Islands. Some areas could see thunderstorms and even some hail. The worst-hit regions are expected to be in the south and east, where intense downpours could lead to localized flooding. Cádiz, in particular, faces heavy rainfall, with up to 40 liters per square meter expected over 12 hours.

Snowfall in the Mountains and Cold Temperatures

As temperatures drop, snowfall is forecast at elevations starting at around 1,300–1,600 meters early in the day, gradually lowering to 800–1,000 meters by the evening. This could lead to travel disruptions in mountainous areas, especially in Cuenca and Guadalajara, where AEMET has issued a yellow snow warning.

Strong Winds and Rough Seas

Gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected in parts of Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, and Cataluña, while the coastal regions of Almería, Granada, and Cádiz could see waves as high as 3 meters. Authorities are advising caution in these areas.

Weekend Weather: A Temporary Break from the Rain

By Friday, the worst of the storm will begin moving towards the Mediterranean, but scattered rain showers will persist, particularly in the south and east. Snowfall will continue in higher elevations, and temperatures will remain lower than usual for this time of year. Saturday will bring a brief respite from heavy rain, though cold temperatures and overnight frosts will be widespread.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

With storm warnings in place across multiple regions, residents are advised to check official weather updates and take necessary precautions. Whether it’s avoiding unnecessary travel, securing outdoor items, or dressing warmly, staying prepared can help minimize the storm’s impact.

Storm Konrad is set to leave its mark, but with the right precautions, Spain can weather yet another powerful system. Stay safe and keep an eye on the latest forecasts from AEMET.
