Weekend Weather in Spain: AEMET Has Issued Orange and Yellow Alerts

Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has issued multiple weather warnings for this weekend, starting from Friday, May 2. Much of the country will be affected by heavy rain, strong winds, and falling temperatures due to an Atlantic storm system.

Some areas in the centre and east of the country, including parts of Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Valencian Community, are under an orange alert, meaning a ‘significant danger’ for intense downpours, strong gusts of wind, and large hail, which could exceed two centimetres in diameter.

Yellow weather warnings cover most of Spain

Most of the rest of Spain is under yellow alerts for rain and storms. Regions affected include Andalucía, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Cataluña, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, and La Rioja.

AEMET has urged people to take care, especially when travelling, as storms may bring sudden changes in conditions. Aena, the Spanish airport operator, recommends that passengers check with their airline before flying, as some flights could be delayed or cancelled.

Temperatures drop, especially inland

Maximum temperatures will fall across most of the country, especially in the northeast and southwest. Exceptions include Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, southeast Spain, and the Balearics, where temperatures may rise slightly. In Murcia, temperatures may still reach 30°C, but other places like Lleida, Granada, and Jaén are expected to stay around 26°C.

Weekend forecast: more rain, but less intense

The rain will continue over the weekend, although it is expected to be less intense than on Friday. On Saturday, cloud cover and showers will increase in the west, parts of the east, and the Balearic Islands. By Sunday, rain is likely across most of the country, and could be more persistent in the north, including the Cantabrian coast and parts of the Central and Iberian systems.
