Spanish Family Among Six Dead in Tragic New York Helicopter Crash
At least six people have died after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York City on Thursday afternoon, April 10. According to the New York Police Department, the victims include both parents, three children, and the pilot, all of whom were part of a Spanish family.
The crash occurred around 3:15 PM local time, 9.15 PM Spanish time, near West Side Highway and Spring Street, prompting immediate responses from emergency vehicles. Authorities have warned of possible traffic delays in the surrounding areas as they work to secure the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud ‘thudding’ sound when the helicopter crashed, suggesting a broken rotor blade. The aircraft came to rest in the Hudson River, near the Holland Tunnel vents, close to Jersey City. Reports say on social media that the Spanish family had rented the helicopter for 15 minutes for a tour over New York City.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the helicopter involved was a Bell 206, a two-bladed helicopter. They have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his sorrow, calling the incident ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘tragic.’ He also confirmed that both the city’s fire and police departments were assisting New Jersey’s emergency services.
